Aromatherapy is an ancient, holistic practice that involves the use of essential oils extracted from aromatic plants to enhance overall health and well-being. The composition of each essential oil determines its individual fragrance and each has its own unique set of beneficial properties. For example, lavender can be calming after a stressful day, while eucalyptus can be a refresher when you’re feeling listless. Essential oils have been known to help lift depression as well as alleviate constipation, headaches, menstrual cramps, muscle aches and many other ailments.

If you are pregnant, epileptic or have a chronic illness, it’s best to consult a physician before using any essential oil.

Some easy ways to enjoy the soothing effects of aromatherapy are:

  • Inhale fragrant aromas continuously from a store-bought diffuser or aroma lamp.
  • During a warm shower, place a few drops of an essential oil blend onto a scrub sponge and rub over your body.
  • Treat a cold by putting a few drops of marjoram or eucalyptus oil in a bowl of boiling water, covering your head with a towel and breathing in the steam.
  • Put a few drops of lavender or chamomile oil on your pillow to induce a peaceful sleep.
  • For soaking achy feet, add tingly peppermint oil to a bowl of warm water.
  • Place a drop or two of your favorite aromatic oil on a tissue or handkerchief. Inhale the fragrance whenever you need a lift.
